Late last year a group of parents formally requested secular programming in Morinville, where there is a Catholic education system and no secular option. In January, the request was denied. Following a meeting between board trustees and Education Minister Dave Hancock, the parents have been left disappointed – no concrete solutions have been put forward. Donna Hunter, spokesperson for the group of parents, has expressed frustration over the situation and has said that “[s]ecular education at a public school should be a given, and it’s not.” Board chairperson Lauri-Ann Turnbull said that several potential solutions were discussed at the meeting and that a solution could come as soon as April. Education Minister Hancock will be leaving it to the board and parents to come to a solution.
