Op-ed: use of sound cannons the “wrong move”

An editorial in the Law Times criticizes the Toronto Police Service’s decision to retain some use of the tone-emitting feature of the new sound cannons. The CCLA has derided the decision as dangerous and hasty, given that the devices have not been provincially-approved for use as a weapon.

The editorial argues that the potential damage that could be caused by the sound cannons could give authorities a “black eye” in the media if they end up injuring protesters. The author goes on to suggest that the police instead rely upon traditional methods of violence prevention.
