Debate erupts over Italian-only seniors’ home

The Globe and Mail reports that York Region Council has approved seniors home policy  that it will only rent to seniors of Italian heritage, despite the fact that most of the tenants are publicly subsidized.  The tension between equal access to housing, and ensuring the maintenance of a culturally-appropriate environment for seniors of specific ethnic groups, has been heightened by the fact that there is reportedly an acute shortage of low-income housing, and a lengthy waiting list for subsidized seniors’ units.
